Shively is a small town in western Kentucky, located about 25 miles west of Louisville. The population was 4,391 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Marshall County. The first permanent settler in what would become Shively was John Dooley in 1812. Dooley's father had come over on the "Cumberland" from Ireland and built a cabin near present-day Shively on Allen Fork of the Ohio River. In 1814, James Doolittle erected a log cabin near present-day Shively on the banks of the river as part of his survey for future home sites in Marshall County. Doolittle also became one of Shively's earliest settlers and he died there in 1857. His son, James Doolittle junior, took over his father's land holdings and kept them until 1953 when they were sold to The Simpsons family for $850,000 USD. Shively post office opened on July 24, 1818 under the name Weldonville; it changed its name to Shively on November 3 that year after Josephine (Joliffe) Hays defeated incumbent postmaster Maud White in an election by vote of men only. Hays was born December 12, 1798, at Pemberley Hall plantation near Georgetown (now Lebanon),KY and moved with her parents to Weldonville when she was six years old; they later moved to nearby Coolbaugh while Joli lived with her grandparents until she married George Ladd at age fourteen in 1821. They had three children: William (born January 15, 1822), Sarah Ann (March 8, 1824), and Josephine Hays (October 10th1827). Josephine Hays married Lemuel Mayo March 3rd 1830 at Coolbaugh Baptist Church; their only child died young at age two months due to pneumonia contracted while living with her husband’s family east of Lexington KY during a food pandemic which struck America between October 1830 and April 1931 known as “the Great Famine” because so many people died from it across most of Kentucky .
Shively was founded in 1821 by Captain John Shively and his wife Judith. The first settler in the area was Nicholas Brown, who arrived in 1824. In 1830, the Shively family built a log cabin on the present site of Old Shively. The original courthouse stood on this property until it burned down in 1862. A new courthouse was built on nearby Main Street, and the old courthouse remained standing until it was destroyed in 1927. The town Clock Tower still stands today and is used as a public library facility.
