Shively is a small town in Kentucky, located about an hour and a half southwest of Lexington. The population was 5,883 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Bowling Green metropolitan area. Shively was founded in 1820 by Nicholas Shively and his wife Annabella White. The present day building on Main Street was built in 1903. At that time it was one of the largest towns in Union County with a population of over 1,000 people. The first post office opened in Shively on June 6, 1825. In 1828 Shively had a schoolhouse and store which burned down; however, another schoolhouse was built soon after and continued to serve as such until it burned down again in 1854. In 1851 Shively had three churches: First Baptist (founded by Mr. John Gentry), Second Presbyterian (founded by Mrs. Andrew McNaught) and Christ Episcopal (established by Revs John Fenton and James Mabry). In 1865 the third church - the Methodist Episcopal Church - was erected on Main Street near where current-day US Route 421 intersects it . On July 2, 1861 Union County Courthouse Complex burned down during an armed robbery attempt at its facility adjacent to Main Street just east of downtown Shive
