The first ammunition factory in Kentucky was built near present-day Bowling Green by James Mitchell in 1811. Ammunition production recommenced during World War II, but stopped again because of air raids on Lexington and other cities. Shively began producing its own ammunition back in 1868 when George Sheppard opened a gun shop there. The town's first rifle cartridge was made from cast lead called "Sheppard's Nine." It was used for hunting small animals such as rabbits and squirrels. However, over time, other types of ammunition were produced, including artillery rounds and mortar shells. In addition to bullets and cartridges, shive residents also manufactured their own soap until 1919 when this industry went out of business due to high competition from imported soap products. In 1949, the town turned over ownership of its munitions plant to the state government for use as an armory; it currently houses a museum about local ammo history along with demonstrations on how to shoot various types of firearms using contemporary rounds and projectiles from past eras

Shively, Kentucky is a small town in Marshall County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,531 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous municipality in Marshall County. Shively has been a village since 1892 and became a town on December 15, 1922. The first settler in Shively was Levi Hargrave who arrived in 1802 from England. He erected a log cabin on the site of what is now the Shively Baptist Church. In 1810-1811 Reverend James Gentry built the first schoolhouse in this area which served as both for school district instruction and for meeting places for religious denominations until it burned down in 1827. In 1821 Samuel Fenton platted and named Shively after his maternal uncle John Shivey of Scotland who had come to America with his family two years earlier. On October 9, 1822, voters voted to form a village charter with a population of twenty-one residents consisting of men over sixteen years old and women under eighteen years old; only one black person voted in that election Shively's early days were difficult due to lack of transportation and also because there was no water available to drink or irrigate crops. However, by 1830s shrivelling farmers had turned their attention to tobacco growing which led to increased trade opportunities with neighboring counties around this time In 1840 Thomas Atkins acquired 640 acres (240 ha) northeast of present day Shivey along the road leading from Paducah to Morehead City near Lexington KY through what is now Marshall County In November 1850 he sold four hundred acres (160 ha) including land east of present day Main Street between I-65W and US 421 for $1,000 cash On January 8th 1861 an act was passed by the United States Congress authorizing “the erection into an independent state”of “Marshall county [Kentucky] composed chiefly but not entirely of slaveholders’ property’… thus Lincoln signed legislation creating Shively as its government center In 1865 while Union troops were besieged within Fort Donelson at Chattanooga TN they ordered all citizens west side of Chickamauga River Bridge across river destroyed so that Confederate forces could not engage them Thereafter General Nathan Bedford Forrest ordered all bridges closed except those crossing below ground so that units could move more freely upriver
