Shelbyville is a town in Shelby County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,852 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington metropolitan area. In 1830 David Capps organized a horse race called "The Gilded Cage." This event quickly become an important social gathering for local farmers and others interested in horse racing. Today it still takes place annually at many different venues throughout town including Race Track Park near downtown which hosts a pre-race atmosphere before races begin; Muddy Fork Resort where amateur golfers can take advantage of their course’s natural moistness for practice or competition; and several large hotels within walking distance which provide live music each night after dinner service concludes with beer or wine tastings by hotel guests (the last two nights are particularly popular).
