Shelbyville is a town in Shelby County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington–Fayette metropolitan area. The first recorded mention of Shelbyville was in 1788 when General James Wilkinson mentioned it in his letters to his friend and fellow Revolutionary War general Nathanael Greene. The community was founded by Order of the Eastern Star colonists who had come from Virginia in search of land east of the Appalachian Mountains. They named their new settlement after John Shelby, an American Revolutionary War hero and member of Parliament from Tennessee. In 1812, Colonel Isaac Shelby organized a militia company to protect settlers on the Cumberland River against Indian attacks. In 1814, he became sheriff of Shelby County and served until 1817 when he resigned due to health problems. He died two years later at age 89. His wife Esther (née Moore) continued to serve as sheriff for many years until her death in 1850. In 1827, Governor Claiborne Morton appointed Judge Augustus Kelley as county attorney which led to the founding of what would become known as "Kelley's Court". In 1830s and 1840s there were several floods that destroyed much property in central Shelbyville but they never stopped the growth or development of the community which slowly regained its strength during Reconstruction period until World War II when most residents left for economic reasons because thereof war production took over local industry creating high unemployment rates among African Americans During World War II many jobs were available outside manufacturing so agricultural workers came into play including hogs and chickens; this increased poverty within black families which contributed significantly to social unrest during that era throughout America . After 1945 most residents returned although some businesses closed due primarily to lack of customers or competition from other nearby towns . The economy rebounded somewhat since 2000s with more job opportunities now available but still Poverty remains due largely to lack education among young adults
