Shelbyville is a town in Hardin County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 5,855 at the 2010 census. Shelbyville is the principal city of the Shelbyville metropolitan area which had a population of 11,526 as of July 1, 2013. The town was founded in 1825 by John Shelby and named for him. It became part of Hardin County in 1827 and was incorporated as a village in 1859. The post office called Shelbyville “New Hope” until 1902. In 1907 it changed its name to “Shelbyville” after General Ulysses S. Grant who had been Mayor of Louisville at the time and had helped found Hardin County. The city hall was built in 1925 and is still used today. The first store opened on Main Street in 1825, with two other stores opening shortly thereafter: James Hennessey & Son (founded about 1830) and Abel Brown & Son (1830). These early pioneers were followed by many others over the next few years including merchants John Meeks (1851), Elijah McCoy (1852), Hiram Alexander (1854), Ambrose Bicknell (1858), Charles Withers (1860), Averill Harlan (1861), Augustus Fenton Clark( 1862-64) Jno Pritchard( 1865-68), Rufus King( 1870-72; died young)), Doctors Tobias Weaver( 1875-77; died young)), Samuel Sloan( 1880-82; born Nov 9th 1880 near Lapham Junction TN& died Aug 15th 1888 aged only 26 yrs old)), Daniel Phelps([email protected]) 1886-92). Many residents served in both the Union Army during World War I and later served as mayors or members of local governments such as Hardin County Court House Commissioners from 1919 to 1932 when that body folded into the present day City Council under current Mayor Donnie Harrison In 1903 Alfred Ladd started manufacturing radios here on Broadway Avenue which continued until 1986 when it merged with Sears Roebuck & Co to form Sears Holdings Inc.. He also started making shoes here beginning around 1915 before moving his business to sampler shoe production overseas where he developed new technologies for footwear made from recycled materials such as plastic bottles . After returning home to find his company being sold off piecemeal throughout 1987 he finally closed it all down completely within 6 months due to lack of profitability This municipally controlled shopping mall complex would reopen under different management starting around 2000 along with various restaurants offering unique culinary experiences until 2003 when it closed again due to budget cuts

The town was founded in 1814 and named for General James Shelby. The first settler in Shelbyville was John Stephenson and his family. Other early settlers included Samuel Wilder, Ebenezer Richardson, Nicholas Searcy and others. In 1827, the land that now makes up Shelbyville was patented to Colonel Isaac McCoy and laid out into strips by him on a deep-water channel near present day downtown Louisville. The town grew rapidly due to its location on a bend in the river and its easy access to transportation including the Ohio River Railroad which connected it with Louisville and other cities across Kentucky. In 1830, Congress designated Shelbyville as the seat of government for部落 of what is today known as southeastern Kentucky following the Treaty of Printanburg which ended the War of 1812 between Great Britain and United States. A courthouse/ jail were built here but were destroyed by fire in 1840 while being used as an arsenal; this event is still commemorated by a plaque on Main Street. In 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell marched through Shelbyville on his way to Lexington where he met Union General Ulysses S Grant at New Market Hall before withdrawing back towards Richmond northeast of Lexington under cover of darkness. A smelter began operations here in 1863 providing coal for local factories but this plant closed down within four years In 1886, Henry Ford set up his first manufacturing business at what is now Oldsmobile Plant #4; this facility would later become Ford's largest factory outside Detroit. One such story goes like this: After Harpers Ferry (now Harpers Ferry National Historical Park), Joe went off duty one evening while stationed aboard USS "Harpers Ferry". He got lost trying to find his quarters aft deck - eventually finding them just aft midshipman's room! Joe then showed himself ashore using jingles he had been taught during naval training... only there wasn't anyone home! As luck would have it (or maybe fate), Captured Joe ran into Lieutenant Vernon Jarrell who happened to be walking ashore nearby - Vernon lent Joe some pants so that Captured Joe could return wearing them instead! < Ref>Vernon Jarrell: His Life & Times: This anecdote illustrates just how popular carpentry became among Americans during World War I - even beyond military personnel! By 1920s more than 100 local businesses employing over 1,000 workers provided essential services for residents including commerce; insurance; real estate development; agriculture;manufacturing arts & crafts products such as Singer sewing machines etc.; however these days most residents continue their traditional roles working long hours behind desks or inside sheds.. Farming has also continued with many families contributing crops year-round.. Today much new housing has been erected since 2000 amidst growing tourism industry especially around historical attractions like Harpers Ferry National Historical Park.

The railroad arrived in 1865 and the mill closed down in 1868. In 1911, the old school building became the first fire department station on the South Side of Louisville; it still stands today as part of the Historical Museum of Louisville County
