Shelbyville is a town in Clark County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 2,599 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington–Fayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Shelbyville were two families who arrived in 1799 from Pennsylvania. In 1814, David Overstreet and his brother-in-law James Sweeny founded the town on land they had bought from the discouraged owners of Logstown Plantation near Georgetown, Kentucky. The Overstreets ran a gristmill and other mills until 1850 when they built a sawmill which still stands to this day. They also erected a school house and began to sell agricultural products such as flour, hay, eggs, butter and milk. In 1824 John Crouch built a log cabin near the present site of downtown Shelbyville on what would become what is now Main Street. He named it "Crouch's Cabin". A year later he married Martha Ladd and became known as "Ladd's Store" because he sold goods at that location for twenty years before moving to better conditions on First Street next door where he continued to operate his store until his death in 1860. His wife operated the store until her death in 1903; after her death it passed through several hands before it was acquired by Dr. Wm Gentry Sellers who operated it until its closure in 1990. In 1898 Elijah Griggs settled near the intersection of First and Second Streets with his family coming from Fulton County (then northcentral Kentucky). Shelbyville is a small town in Kentucky, United States. Shelbyville was founded in 1801 by Daniel Boone and his family. The population of Shelbyville was 1,362 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Butler County. Shelbyville owes its existence to the Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1805-1806, which passed through Butler County on their way southward across America. Boone's home at Knob Hill became an important stop on their journey, and the surrounding community developed around it as a result. In 1807, when the expedition reached Missouri City, they left behind three men--Boone, his brother James, and John Marshall--to continue exploring what would become Butler County. They named it after their hosts: Lewis (the general) and Clark (the surveyor). The first school in Shelbyville was built in 1819 by Reverend John Knox while he served as pastor at nearby Mount Zion Baptist Church. The first post office was established here in 1840; the current one opened in 1903. In 1863 General Patrick Cleburne arrived from Louisville with 800 troopers to help garrison Fort Donelson against Confederate forces during the American Civil War; he donated land for a courthouse and district court building on which these facilities now stand. By 1870 Shelbyville had about 2200 residents; by 1900 its population had more than 5000 people including many farmers who located their crops near Great River Valley Railroad lines that brought goods directly into town for processing into ready-to-eat foods like potatoes or apples In 1865 Colonel Thomas Jarratt reorganized Tennessee Volunteers under Brigadier General John Capps to fight against Confederates along Kentucky’s eastern border He also purchased some property hereabouts where Main Street now stands from David Fenton who owned part of East Tennessee River Resort & Casino inside present day Memphis TN
