Shelbyville is a small town in Kentucky that was founded in 1802. It is located on the Cumberland River, approximately 25 miles east of Cincinnati and 50 miles west of Louisville. In 1905, Shelbyville became the seat of Johnson County. The population of Shelbyville decreased from its peak in 1907 to its current size in 2000. Although it has experienced occasional significant growth since then, Shelbyville remains a small town with modest industry and limited services. The village forms part of the Clarksburg-Winchester Micropolitan Statistical Area, which has a total population of 968,000 people. The area now known as Shelbyville was first settled by Native Americans who arrived here during the late 1800s. By 1802, there were about 100 residents living here. The first post office was established in this town on July 8, 1802. When Fort Pitt was built nearby in 1803, settlers began to arrive here for military service; many worked at the fort until it closed down in 1813. After the war ended, many returning soldiers moved into this community and started a new business venture called "The Post Office". In 1865, when Johnson County was created from parts of Adams and Jefferson counties, Shelbyville became one of its five townships (along with Clintontown (now Clinton), Fort Mitchell (now Mingo Junction), Lebanon (now Lawrenceburg), and White Sands). Although most people associated with agriculture throughout most of their lives – both before and after World War II – some residents have also become involved in manufacturing or professional careers outside their homes. Shelbyville is a town in Shelby County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 2,818 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Shelbyville Township. The downtown area is home to one of the two main shopping districts in Shelbyville, which includes many small businesses and several large retailers. The first settlers in what is now Shelbyville were farmers who arrived around 1810. They named their community after General David Ludlow, an American Revolutionary War hero who fought at Battle of Bunker Hill and Yorktown. The early settlers were primarily Presbyterian but by 1830 they had also started to arrive from Northern Kentucky as well. By 1840 there were over 100 families in the community and it had a school and store. A post office was established in 1843 and by 1854 it had become known as "Shelbyville". In 1865 (two years after America's Civil War ended) Confederate General Andrew Johnson moved his headquarters from Louisville to nearby Clarksburg so he could continue commandeering supplies for his army during the war effort- this led to much friction between Unionists and Confederates in central Kentucky. When Union forces learned about this move, they sent a force into town to rout Johnson's troops; however, some residentsPPPthrew stones and other missiles at them as they passed through town limits! This skirmish effectively ended Johnson's stay in Shelbyville before he could do any damage (although local historians have since claimed that without such an action most of what happened during Reconstruction would never have come about). During Reconstruction the community changed hands several times until it finally settled on property near present day Interstate 65/Kentucky Route 219 east of downtown where it remained until 1951 when it was annexed by nearby Fort Knox Naval Air Station
In the late 1800s, Shelbyville was a small town on the banks of the James River. The town was founded by General John C. Fremont in 1825 as a post office and trading center on the confluence of the Donelson and Elk rivers. The first stores were built in 1830, and By 1835, Shelbyville had a population of about 100 people. In 1840, General George Crook established a cavalry outpost at Shelbyville to protect settlers from Indian attacks. By 1850, Shelbyville had increased its population to 350 people and became an important transportation hub for goods arriving from Kentuckywestward along the Cumberland Trail and eastward across Illinois into Ohio. In 1852, General James Heth’s Union army invaded Kentucky and destroyed much of what remained of Confederate forces in that state; this event is known as the Battle of Fallen Timbers. After successfully repelling repeated Confederate threats to his community during the war, General Fremont returned home in 1853 to found new settlements around Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1865, Abraham Lincoln was assassinated; after several days of mourning throughout Kentucky, Lincoln was succeeded by Ulysses S. Grant who ordered military operations against Radical Republicans in that state (the Reconstruction period). In 1870-71, Sherman's march through Georgiaand Tennesseedemonstrated America's growing industrial might; as a resultofthiseventShelbyville lost some importance but continued to exist as an agricultural center until it closed its doors in 1985.
