Its name comes from an early settler, Hiram Shelby, who named his farm "Shelbyville" after his home place in England. A school district was formed here in 1898 and its headquarters were located in downtown Shelbyville until it moved to Scottsboro in 1962. The old courthouse which stands on Main Street between Third and Fourth Streets has been used as a garage for many years and is currently being used as apartments. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , of which is land and (1%) is water.

Shelbyville is a town in Shelby County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 2,969 at the 2010 census. It was named for General Nathan Bedford Forrest. The first permanent settler in what is now Shelbyville was Nicholas Harker, who arrived in 1784. He married Anna Lear and had four children: Daniel, James, Mary and Hugh. In 1827 Nicholas Harker's brother-in-law John Marshall bought land from him and laid out a street grid that still divides the community today. In 1830 William & Martha Searcy developed a cotton gin on their farm south of downtown (now the old post office). They also built a log cabin on the hill overlooking downtown to house their workers during harvest time. This structure still stands as part of downtown’s landmark district today. In 1834 Union general James Longstreet camped near where present day Shelbyville Boulevard and Main Street meet to march his army across the Cumberland River into Tennessee before marching back home across said river again two weeks later; he left behind over 1,000 men with longbows loaded with arrows because they were not allowed any ammunition beyond what they could carry themselves! A small village began to form around this battle ground called “Hollywood” after General Longstreet’s encampment which would eventually grow into nearby Shelbyville proper! As early as 1840 several stores were operating in downtown including Hardee’s insurance office run by Elijah Searcy and his son Elijah Jr., Isaac Goodrich grocery store operated by Levi Hardee Sr., Drury Drug Store by Abraham Drury (the father of future mayor Winfield Scott Drury), Turkey House restaurant started by Jno Burchill at 4th & Vine Streets operated by John Musgrove until it burned down about 1890/1892 (unfortunately no record exists of when it actually opened)[1][2], etcetera! Downtown business owners gradually moved away from central business district towards new commercial areas such as University Heights east of Courthouse Square beginning around 1860[3]. By 1870 most businesses had closed or moved out of town altogether due to decline in demand for cotton goods statewide[4]. However one extant building from this era remains – The Masonic Temple at 7th & Vine Streets – which served as an entertainment center for many years until it burned down in 1978[5]. When railroads came through town during the late 1800s every resident received news updates via sign language while they waited on trains outside the depot.[6] Today there is only oral history kept alive courtesy of local residents who are able to communicate well enough even without speech therapy equipment! During World War II much activity took place along US 31 north of downtown including manufacturing plants used for munitions production northeast of town near mile marker 243 on what is now I-75W between Louisville and Nashville; these plants are still visible today but have been abandoned since then [7][8]; some buildings remain however such as Bethlehem Steel Works located just off Interstate 75W just south of exit 244 within miles reachable driving distance from Shelbyvillians like myself
