Shelbyville is a small town in Henderson County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 5,895 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Henderson County. Shelbyville is part of the Lexington metropolitan area. The first settlers in Shelbyville were white men from Virginia who arrived in 1785. They named their community after Colonel John Shelby, a British officer who had helped defend Lexington during the American Revolution. The town was incorporated on July 1, 1871, and grew rapidly due to its location near the new Louisville and Nashville Railroad and its access to Interstate 65. During World War II, Shelbyville became an important military supply center for the Allied forces fighting in Europe. In 1951, it was renamed for General George Custer after he was killed in action with his cavalry regiment during the Korean War. The downtown area of Shelbyville has been renovated several times since it first opened to business in 1871. Most recently, construction began on a $45 million renovation project that will include new businesses and residences as well as a public plaza and cultural center inside the old courthouse building on Main Street. Shelbyville is a small town in western Kentucky about 25 miles north of Frankfort. It was founded in 1826 by prosperous planters as a post office on the road from Winchester to Louisville. The settlement grew rapidly, and by 1830 it had a population of 1,000 people. By 1840 Shelbyville had become the most important town in what became the Bourbon County District. In 1853, Shelbyville was made the capital of Bourbon County. The following year it became one of two counties (the other being Nicholas) that were created out of eastern Jefferson County. In 1865, when Bourbon County was divided into two parts, Shelbyville went with the part that included Richmondsboro and Cave Hill. In 1868, however, when another part of bourbon county was added, Shelbyville reverted to its original status as a post office and small town. The growth of Shelbyville paralleled that of nearby Frankfort; by 1850 both towns had more than 2,000 residents. However, because much land in bourbon county was undeveloped at this time, only a few hundred people lived in Shelbyville proper and most of the area around it developed chiefly as agricultural settlements catering to slave labor in neighboring plantations. little development took place until after emancipation; during these years many African Americans moved into slavery from surrounding states such as Kentucky or Tennessee rather than stay behind in rural areas where they could have been free but may have risked their lives by resistence or violence against white settlers. After Reconstruction ended in 1876 most black Americans who remained within Appalachia assimilated into white society through various efforts including education and work opportunities available outside their homes or via family connections or adoption schemes sponsored by Northern elites anxious for some form of racial integration within American society generally accepted even then as an desirable goalstatus quo antebellum whites sought to maintain despite increasing numbers freed slaves living among them while themselves remaining largely segregated socially and economically within minority Black enclaves like Ferguson Township near Nashville). During World War I Confederate veteran General Robert E Lee tried unsuccessfully to gain control over nearby Fort Campbell (now Murray Army Airfield) which served primarily as an ammunition depot for United States forces engaged onthe battlefields near Paris; after he withdrew his army operations stopped short due lack resources instead moving heavy equipment eastward past Cumberland Gap towards Dayton Ohio across state lines resulting finally Ulysses S Grant’s Union army breaking through Federal positions at Appomattox Court House effectively ending Reconstruction Era throughout southern Appalachian region effective March 11 1865.)
Shelbyville was founded in 1792 by John Shelby and his family. The town was originally located on the Cumberland River, but it moved to its present location in 1882. In 1875, Shelbyville became a city.
