The community's rich history includes pioneer moments such as when Drury College began operations in 1865; when General Motors moved its manufacturing plants to nearby Jefferson City after World War II; when Ford Motor Company built its first car plant here; when Coca-Cola began production here; when PepsiCo opened its new bottling plant here; and most recently during the days leading up to Hurricane Katrina which destroyed much vital infrastructure including many small businesses within Shelbyville's walls Many cultural events are organized throughout the year for residents including art shows galleries openings/ Closing night receptions at various venues like The Bellefontaine Inn or Cannery Cafe., live music performances at venues like Live Oak Casino or Joe's Pub etc.,etc.

Shelbyville was a small town in Bourbon County, Kentucky, United States. It was founded in 1812 by planters who bought land at the mouth of the Cumberland River. The town grew slowly until the American Civil War, when it exploded into activity. By 1865, Shelbyville had a population of over 1,500 people. After the war ended, the population continued to grow rapidly and by 1881 it had reached 7,000 people. In 1902, Shelbyville became an independent city and has since grown rapidly as a commercial center and cultural center for southeastern Kentucky.
Shelbyville is located in the eastern part of Hardin County, Kentucky, on the border with Johnson County. The population was 1,951 at the 2000 census. It has since grown to 3,711. Shelbyville is named after General John Shelby, who fought in the American Revolution and was a signer of the Declaration of Independence. In 1847, settlers arrived in what is now Shelbyville from Illinois and Indiana. The first post office was established in 1849. A sawmill and gristmill were built here in 1853-54 by James Warburton and his brother-in-law Jno. Hays respectively; these mills began operations as early as 1853. In 1865 a cotton gin replaced one of two earlier cotton gins at this location; it continued to operate until 1907 when it burned down due to an accident. The town prospered through its relationship with local farmers and entrepreneurs; many of these men are buried here including Josiah Topeka (1812-1896), mayor of Louisville from 1850-1857; Wm Denton (1819-1900), founder of Nashville's Denton Hotel; Asa Gray (1798-1871), senator from Kentucky during the time period covered by this article; Andrew Carnegie (1872-1937), cofounder of Carnegie Steel Company;; Hiram Sells (1800 - 1865) who ran a general store that sold whiskey out of his house for years until he was driving off into town on horseback to buy supplies when he met an Indian chief who told him about new land across the river which could be purchased for $10 per acre or less than this price; Tom Sawyer lost $8 on an unsuccessful attempt to buy goods from Curley Wright at a nearby farmhouse several years later
