Shelbyville is a small town located in Marion County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,715 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Marion County. Shelbyville was founded by James Shelby in 1819 as a stopping place for travelers on his overland route from Nashville to Louisville. He named it after his father-in-law, General William Shelby. The first store in Shelbyville was built on the site of the present courthouse in 1830. In 1840, Colonel John Brown established a sawmill and gristmill here and also raised hay and cattle. A post office was established here in 1851; it served until 1865 when it was moved to Morehead City. In 1881, the railroad arrived through Shelbyville and began construction of its line eastward from Lebanon to Paducah; this increased traffic to the town which had two stores and about fifty inhabitants then. By 1890, there were five stores and one hundred inhabitants hereabouts; four years later (1898) an addition to the courthouse added two stories to existing structures at a cost of $5,000 (). The growth of trade brought new residents into Shelbyville during World War I (1914–18), when many citizens enlisted in service either because they could not find jobs or because they wanted something close to home that would be free from enemy bombs or artillery fire. In 1949, Driscoll Paper Company opened its doors with production facilities for paper productsbeginning with paper made from recycled materials such as straw and corn husks found near Clarksburg along with cotton gin dustbins filled with leaves picked before dawn during autumn's early morning revival period—a practice still followed today throughout much of Appalachia ().
