Shelby, who fought in the American Civil War and later served as military governor of Kentucky. Shelbyville was founded on a tract of land granted to John Fenton by James Knoppers on January 17, 1807. The town began as a log cabin colony with six residents and grew rapidly due to its natural resources: coal, oil shale, wheat straw, cornstalks and timber. By 1830 the population had increased to 100 and by 1840 it had reached 150 people. In 1846 Samuel Witherspoon donated 600 acres (2 km²) of his estate for town development; this became known as "Witherspoon Square." In 1870 Jethro Moulds laid out what is now downtown Shelbyville on land he had purchased from Witherspoon square; additional development took place until 1895 when all but one block of original downtown were destroyed by fire caused by an accident during construction of the Western Union Telegraph Line Extension through town . The first school opened in 1865; it remains open today as Holmes Elementary School. In 1893 Rufus Eastman organized the first agricultural fair in the community while still living in Lexington; that event resulted in $200 worth of goods being sold within Shelbyville limits that day alone

Shelbyville is a small town in central Kentucky, United States. The population was 3,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Louisville–Jefferson County, Kentucky Metropolitan Statistical Area. Shelbyville is one of theChatanooga-Muncie-Paducah Combined Statistical Areas. The first settlers to Shelbyville were three men from Manchester, England who came overland in 1813 and laid out a township in what is now eastern Shelby County. They named their land "Shelbyville." In 1827, General David Henderson purchased 640 acres (249 ha) of land east of present day downtown Shelbyville from John Capps. He developed it into what is today known as Henderson's Land and laid out a town on the site. The first store was built on Main Street in 1830 by Jno. Bogan and later became the home of Elijah Moulton Storey until his death in 1851. The first school was built on Woodstock Road in 1831 by Reverend Wm Higginson and later became Harrison Academy School before becoming Waynesboro Elementary School in 1929 when that school merged with Waynesboro High School there to form Waynesboro/Harrison Middle School which continues operation today as an all-day public high school
Shelbyville was founded in 1792 by the Shelby family. The name is derived from the Susquehanna River and means "settlement on the Susquehanna." The original village of Shelbyville consisted of only a few homes. By 1800, the town had grown to over 100 residents and developed into a small commercial center. In 1824, the state of Kentucky created a new county in eastern Randolph County, which included much of present-day Shelbyville. The area became known as Randolph County's "The Foothills". In 1845, a group of businessmen led by John A. Ferguson bought land north of present-day Shelbyville and began to build a large cotton plantation. Over time, this plantation would become one of the most successful in Kentucky. In 1868, he sold his share in the plantation to his son-in-law James Aiken. Afterward, James Aiken devoted himself completely to developing and running the property. He also served as sheriff for Randolph County for many years. During World War II, General George Smedley Patton's headquarters were located in Shelbyville during 1942 through 1945 while he was commanding Army forces in North Africa and Italy. This gave rise to rumors that Patton might have driven down Main Street during those wartime days after dinner at Mr.'s Place restaurant!
