In 1865, while Confederate troops were besieging Knoxville (then part of Union hands), General Robert Ewell ordered General David Halleck to make an attack on the town. Halleck refused because he did not want to risk Hampton Roads being captured by Confederate forces instead of Union ones. As a result of this decision, much of Knoxville was destroyed during the siege that followed. The following year, Shelbyville joined Campbell County newly formed from parts of Fayette County east of Lebanon Road and south of State Route 221 Throughout its history there has been one main industry that has helped drive economic growth in Shelbyville: farming This has included things like raising chickens or pigs for eggs or meat; growing crops like cotton or potatoes; making cheese; doing construction work; or manufacturing anything associated with production including cars or machinery

During World War II, many local businesses aided in helping to support military efforts throughout Europe and North Africa. The town became an important center for industry after the war, with a number of large factories located within its boundaries. The population peaked at around 5000 residents in 1970 but has since declined slightly due to suburbanization and related factors.
