In 1814, a ferry crossed over the river at what is now known as Old Fort Harrison to connect with larger settlements on the other side but this ferry service stopped operations around 1830 due to changes inriver navigation which made it difficult for barges to cross safely. In 1861, when Kentucky became a state, Shelbyville merged with hardincounty to form what is today called Hardin County

In 1829, it became an incorporated town. The population grew to over 10,000 by 1850, and to over 20,000 by 1860. In 1870, Shelbyville became a city with a population of around 30,000. The city's growth slowed after World War II until it reached its current size in the late 1990s.
