Shelbyville, Kentucky is a small town located in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The population was 9,362 at the 2010 census. Shelbyville is the county seat of Shelby County. It is part of the Louisville-Jefferson County metropolitan area. The land that makes up Shelbyville was first settled by French colonists in 1701 and named for Sir John Shelby, an English gentleman who had purchased some land in what is now eastern Kentucky. In 1802, while serving as justice of the peace for Shelby County, Judge James Cranch discovered coal deposits on what would become known as "The Hill." This discovery led to the town's growth and development over time – it became a ghost town during World War II because so few people mines coal. Today, Shelbyville remains a primarily agricultural community with a significant manufacturing sector. Manufacturing includes various types of construction materials such as brick and tile; automobiles and truck parts; food products such as tomatoes and pickles; and clothing items including jeans and overalls. A major employer in the community today is Carrier Corporation which manufactures air conditioning units for homes and businesses throughout America. Other notable employers include First Baptist Church which operates a large grocery store chain; Stroudsburg Savings Bank which provides banking services to residents in downtown Shelbyville; and Riverbend Credit Union which has its headquarters in neighboring Jefferson County

The city has several notable structures including: The General James Hinton House which is a National Historic Landmark; The First Presbyterian Church which is also a National Historic Landmark; and The Courthouse Annex which is also a National Historic Landmark. Additionally, several other buildings have been designated as local landmarks such as The Smith-Mundt House and Park Preserve which are both located in downtown Shelbyville.
Shelbyville was founded in 1785 by John Shelby and his wife Deborah. It was named for General Andrew Jackson, who had been a friend of the Shelbys. The town grew quickly, and by 1812 it had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1815, the United States Congress passed the Harrison Act which granted voting rights to African Americans in Tennessee. This led to increased black migration to Shelbyville, which helped support its growth. The town also developed an important cotton industry. By 1860, Shelbyville had a population of over 10,000 people and was one of the largest towns in Kentucky. However, during the American Civil War (1861-1865), Shelbyville sided with the Confederate States of America and lost many residents and businesses to Union forces.
