Shelbyville is a town in and the county seat of Shelby County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 9,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Louisville–Jefferson City–Bristol, KY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Shelbyville Historic District includes over 100 buildings dating from 1813 to 1910. The town was named for General Andrew Jackson's older brother-in-law Colonel John Shelby (1782-1858). In 1792, when Kentucky became a part of the United States, Colonel Shelby bought 8 acres (2 km²) of land on the east side of what is now downtown Shelbyville from James Robertson. He built a log cabin and called it "Hickory Point." In 1800, he sold his land to David Denny for $1 per acre ($27 per km²). David Denny also founded Mount Vernon Academy which later became Vanderbilt University. In 1813, Colonel John Shelby bought two miles (3 km) northeast of present day downtown from Robert Waddy for $5 per acre ($137 per km²). He renamed it "Shelbyville" after his older brother-in-law and moved his family there.

Shelbyville is a town in Spencer County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,749 at the 2010 census. The community was named after Shelby County, Alabama. The first settler in Shelbyville was David Stephenson in 1827. He and his wife Anna were the first white people to live in what is now Spencer County when it was organized as a county on December 12, 1826. David Stephenson also built the first schoolhouse in Shelbyville which still stands today and is used as a museum. In 1828, John Hanks settled in Shelbyville and started the first grocery business in town. It later became known as Hanks' Grocery Company and still operates today. Another early settler was Cephus Sheppard who arrived around 1830 from Virginia with his family of nine children and two women. He set up a gristmill on the river near present-day downtown Shelbyville and built a house there for himself and his family. A small creek called Sheppard's Creek flows through downtown today where he operated his mill until it burned down in 1865. In 1840, William Fenton moved to Shelbyville from Winchester, Kentucky with his pregnant wife Jane Fenton and their six children under one roof for safety reasons following the outbreak of the Mexican–American War (1846–48). They located their home on Third Street between Broadway and College Streets until they sold it to Jno Epps Sr., an African American carpenter by trade who had come to America fromAlabama some years earlier seeking opportunity and freedom from slavery which then prevailed throughout much of north-central USA In 1850 Fenton married Sarah Laddie Greenough (born about 1800) who came overland with her parents fromManchester Maryland during that year’s free state movement across US borderlands newly freed by General Winfield Scott Together they founded Southeastern Hardeman School District No 516 pupils boarding 9 weeks/year divided among ten schools located east of Lebanon City off SR 356/SR 388 thence southwesterly along present day US Highway 441 corridor to Jesse Owens Elementary School (grades PreK-8th), new High School opened 1912 inside old State Capitol building – all without tuition paid by parents; post office established within limits of current school site 1908 .With this pioneering effort starting small local residents soon developed personal relationships w/educators & political leaders creating important social & cultural components vital for future growth
On April 14, 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House in Virginia. The event ended the American Civil War and Shelbyville was one of the many cities to experience the effects of the war. After the war, a number of soldiers and their families settled in Shelbyville. Many businesses were founded during this time including J.C. Penney & Company, Union Mills (a cotton gin), and Fidelity Bank. In 1872, a railroad line was built through Shelbyville and it soon became an important hub for southern Kentucky trade. The town continued to grow until World War II when it shrunk as a result of lack of industry and military activity in the area
