Today much of what made Shelbyville so successful has been lost within its boundaries: it is now a small town with few if any streets named after individuals or products from its past. Nevertheless, some aspects of its history remain prominent including: The current library building which was completed in 1902; The Apollo Theater which opened on November 17th 1915 and played host to performances by Harry James Orchestra; And Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) programs which have helped teach local farmers about sustainable growing practices

In 1814, the Union army destroyed a bridge over the River Cumberland, which made it difficult for Confederate forces to cross to the other side. This caused much damage to Shelbyville and its economy. The city rebuilt its bridge in 1861. The population of Shelbyville increased greatly during the 20th century, thanks in part to industrialization and World War II. Today, Shelbyville is a small town with a population of about 507 people.
