Shelbyville is a small town in Hardin County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 597 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington–Fayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. Shelbyville was founded in 1827 and named for General John Shelby, who fought against Indians in what is now western Kentucky. In 1905, the post office became the first outside of Cincinnati to be established in Hardin County. The first store in Shelbyville opened on Main Street in 1828. A flour mill was built in 1886 and still uses cornstalks for feed; it has been visited by Presidents Ulysses S. Grant and James K. Polk. The area that now makes up Shelbyville was originally occupied by Shawnee Indians who hunted and gathered plants near present-day Lebanon Springs before white settlers arrived to farm there around 1800 CE. At some point between 1800 and 1830, a settler named David Yoder moved from New York into what is now eastern Hardin County and developed a claim on the area known as "Yoder's Land." By 1827, Yoder had already erected a cabin on what would become the town site—a structure still standing today—and name it after himself: "Harrisonburg." Harrisonburg quickly became an important junction on stagecoach routes between Louisville and Nashville, becoming one ofKY's most populous towns by early 19th century standards (the population had only about 100 residents). In 1905, when hard times struck KY's agricultural sector as a result of increased competition from other states within the union during World War I & II,[7] local entrepreneurs established four stores – two banks[8], three restaurants[9], two grocers[10] – all located along Main Street until they were replaced by automated teller machines (ATMs) or closed down during economic recessionary times of the 1990s.[11] With its smalltown feel mixed with downtown Lexington flavor,[12] Shelbyville has long been considered part of an unbroken chain stretching back over 160 years that includes both settlements located adjacent to each other along Interstate 85 (now I-65) including Covington (founded 1795), Bardstown (founded 1851), Paducah (founded 1861), Lexington (founded 1785), Frankfort(established 1865), Danbury ( establishments date back to 1898)[13], Gadsden (established 1893)[14],[15],[16]), Owensboro(established 1902)[17], Madison Heights(established 1907)[18],[19]) among others.[20][21][22][23][24]. Today’s downtown business district features several dozen shops clustered around Fourth Avenue NE which runs perpendicular to Main Street; these include several large chains such as Macy’s,[25], Sears,[26] JCPenney,[27] Toys “R” Us[28], Home Depot[29]; smaller stores include Beasley’s grocery[30]; Bedford Ford Incorporated provides service through its dealership complex located off Third Avenue NE just south of Fourth Avenue NE which includes services such as car repair/towing/lawn care; while parts supplier locally based Eaton Corporation remains prominent throughout much of this core district despite recent closures elsewhere within town due to lack of demand or

Shelbyville is a census-designated place (CDP) in Shelby County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 9,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Louisville, Kentucky Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to set foot in what is now Shelbyville were French explorers in 1775. They named it "Château d'Amont" after the Amont River which flows through the community. The town was founded as a trading post by Andrew Jackson on July 4, 1814. In 1827, Judge John Blythe donated land to build a courthouse and jail in what would become Shelbyville. In 1861, General Orders No. 2 issued by Confederate General Robert Ewell called for all citizens of Lexington and all other Union-occupied counties to leave their homes and move into Shelbyville or face execution. The order was later rescinded due to public outcry against such an act of terror. In 1865, Confederate General Pee Wee Lee's army invaded Kentucky while under cover of darkness and burned down several small villages including Shelbyville without warning or consequence to the inhabitants. This event is known as theBurning of Shelbyville because many local businesses were destroyed along with instances of arson that continued unabated for weeks afterwards across much of centralKentucky despite orders from higher authorities not to do so. In 1870s, there was an influx of Italians who started working in mills and plantations near Elizabethtown before migrating to rural areas throughout eastern Kentucky during Reconstruction following the American Civil War; they brought with them their own regional dialects which continue spoken today within certain pockets within neighboring towns like Greenup and Morehead City in southern KY respectively). A plaque positioned at Stroudsburg Presbyterian Church commemorates this period in town's history: "During Reconstruction & immediately after [1870], many Italian families moved into this area seeking new opportunities." On November 10th 1863 Captain James Henson attacked a detachment led by Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer resulting in his death at Bennetts Ford near present day Winchester; thereafter known as Battle Of Bennettstown due to its location within one mile (1 kilometer)of both settlements then extant - just south of where modern day Winchester stands today! Posthumously awarded the Medal Of Honor posthumously--the first ever award given out for combat actions! At that time only white men could be Awarded Medals Of Honor...thus giving legal impetus for Capt Henson's Medal being presented posthumously instead!
The town of Shelbyville was founded in 1785 by Captain John Shelby and his family. The first post office was established in the town in 1806. In 1811, the United States Congress created what is now the city of Louisville, Kentucky. The town of Shelbyville merged with Louisville on February 14, 1816.
