Shelbyville is a small town in Hardin County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,554 at the 2010 census. As of the 2010 census, the racial makeup of Shelbyville was 97.8% white and 2.2% black. Hispanic or Latino people made up 0.9% of the population. The first settlers in Shelbyville were probably Native Americans who came to look for land to farm during the French and Indian War (1756-1763). They built their homes on high ground overlooking the river that separated Hardin County from Garrard County which today is part of Louisville, Kentucky. In 1786, John Saylor bought 640 acres (253 hectares) of what is now Shelbyville from James Wilkinson and began farming it. He named his farm "Shelby" after his wife's family name Shelter who also had property in that area at that time. In 1801 Zebulon PikeMapleton acquired 521 acres (200 hectares) adjoining Saylor's land from him for $100 per acre ($4 million at current values). Mapleton named his new settlement "ShelbyVILLE" in honor of his friend and neighbor John Shelby who had lent him money for the purchase. In 1814 General Robert Epps invaded western Kentucky with an army under General Thomas Wolfe and when he reached Shelbyville he found no one home except a couple of women who went into hiding when they heard news of Epps' march through their community on July 4th, 1814; they later returned to tell their tales around dinnertime that night! The story goes like this: When Epps arrived there were several hundred people living in Shelbyville but within two weeks most everyone had fled because they were afraid of possible battle with Wolfe's army which was only about 20 miles away! Aftermaths: There are no contemporary reports or accounts to back up this story so we cannot know for certain if it actually happened or not but it seems likely it did as many people abandoned their homes before Sherman's march arrived! It may have been more due to fear and uncertainty than anything else as Sherman's forces passed through eastern Tennessee and westernKentucky without encountering any resistance! If true then this event would be one of history’s earliest examples Of mass flight!! Today there are numerous stories about how much larger armies might have fared if encountered similar numbers amounting inhabitants fleeing insteadOf fighting!!! Anyway, by 1830 all but one house on Saylor’s original 640 acre tract had been replaced by frame buildings primarily stores/homeschooling institutions etc., with a few churches also constructed over time including First Baptist Church Built 1888 located south corner on Old National Road now US 12 & KY 249 east side just northwest corner Of cemetery currently known as Masonic Temple And Third Baptist Church Also Built 1800 Near present day intersection Of US 12 & KY 249 About 3 miles east Of historical site called “Masonic Temple” Now known as Community Hall ). In 1834 Henry Clay decided upon a run for president against Andrew Johnson so he traveled throughout West Virginia trying to build support among farmers there before finally making his way down I-81 towards Knoxburg where he hoped Johnson would be holding rallies – something Clay knew could draw large crowds! Unfortunately for Clay things didn't go well as Johnson won easily though some polls showed close races elsewhere in Kentucky!. A year later Clay ran again but this time lost handily toJames Kerkorian!. That same year American Fur Company began trading with India through Lexington so traders started moving into town beginning in earnest Factory expansion followed soon thereafter along both sides(now Old National Road) leading uptown outgrowing what little rural space remained until development starting taking hold shortly after World War II !! Today still Standing historic building sitting On old Rd next To modern day store fronts former Post Office being used currently as storage
