In 1801, General Andrew Jackson sold part of Hardin County to John Fenton for $10,000. That same year, Shelbyville became part of Decatur Township. In 1819, Judge James Covington organized the township into a county and named it Hardin County after himself and other prominent citizens there. Hardin County was established on November 3, 1821 when it was combined with Whitley and Bell counties to formKY’s new Territory of Kentucky. On February 14th of that year President James Ketchum signed legislation creating Hardin County as one piece of this territory In 1865 hard-pressed Union forces under Majors Ewell Brownell fought their way through Shelbyvillians overwhelming numbers at Battle Creek Bridge (now called Hagerstown Ford) near present day Hagerstown, Maryland - setting off what is now known as the Civil War in KY On October 1st 1870 during Reconstruction KY’s General Assembly passed an act providing for Negro voting rights thereby effectively ending segregation in KY In 1907 much surgery took place at Vanderbilt University Hospital – including operation on then Governor John Bel Edwards – which led to improvement in his health On December 15th 1909 US Senator Hiram Johnson visited Pony Gap Resort & Spa located 12 miles northeast of downtown KnoxvilleTN where he made presentations on “Our National Parks” before dinner with local dignitaries
