In 1865, Richmond, Kentucky was the site of a land struggle between farmers and squatters. The squatters were led by Andrew Johnson and wanted to create a city on the land they claimed as their own. The farmers refused to give up their land, so a shootout ensued. Five farmers were killed, one was wounded, and twenty-one were taken into custody. This event is known as the Battle of Richmond. The battle helped spur more people to come to Richmond and help fight for its rights. By 1871, Richmond had become an important trade center due to its location on the Ohio River. The town was also growing rapidly in terms of population and commerce because it became easy for goods to be transported across the river using steamboats. There was also significant growth in manufacturing due to the availability of cheap labor in nearby Cincinnati. This period saw great change within Richmond because many new immigrants arrived during this time including Germans, Irishmen, Italians, Poles, Czechs, Russians, Greeks and Japanese Americans. These newcomers brought with them their cultures and religions which created challenges for locals who did not yet have experience living with these groups. Additionally, there was a large influx of African Americans who had been freed from slavery during the American Civil War. As this group grew closer to English-speaking residents in downtown Richmond they began making loud noises that quickly gained attention from passersby and police officers alike! During this time there also appeared several important landmarks inRichmond’s history including Robert E Lee’s Monumental House (now part of University City), King George IV Bridge (now called Third Street bridges),and Virginia State Capitol building (now located at 502 Wacker Drive). Additionally numerous businesses such as Sears Roebuck & Company and Alexander Graham Bell merged or opened additional locations in downtown Richmond during this time; creating what is now known as “the Broadwalk District” around Corner Ballou Street near Mechanics Hall University Center).
