In 1830, when Louisville was founded as the new national capital, Richmond became an important trade center due to its location on high ground near both water supplies and wagon roads leading north to Cincinnati and south to Nashville. A thriving commercial district developed around downtown with several stores lining High Street between Fourth Street and State Road 1 (now US 64). One such store was Johnson & Wales Bakery which opened its doors on High Street just west of present day Interstate 65 (then US 421) in 1865. The bakery continued until 1984 when it closed amid competition from newer bakeries throughout Kentucky.
