The first firearms in Richmond were muzzleloaders made by John Brown of Providence, Rhode Island. They were used for hunting small game such as rabbits and squirrels. This regiment was ordered to march into Tennessee to help repel Mexican forces under Santa Anna who had invaded Texas and claimed part of Mexico for himself. On September 12th,1836, Brigade No 1 reached Murfreesboro where they joined up with Brigades 2 & 3 from East Tennessee and marched south towards Chattanooga where they encountered General Polk’s Union Army trying to cross the river Cumberland River at Lookout Mountain National Monument Park near Knoxville on October 15th 1836 Cincinnati Daily Courier article dated October 15th 2006: Confederate Soldiers Battle Unionists Near Lookout Mountain National Monument This battle resulted in two deaths for each side with over 60 injured soldiers including 10 officers It is interesting to note that there are no records or any accounts from this time period mentioning any type of gunpowder being used other than arrow or musket balls
