Richmond, Kentucky is a small town in Clay County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Lexington–Fayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Richmond was Capt. John Smith in 1607 when he and his party explored what is now Clay County. He named it New Bern after his native Bermuda. A year later, he founded Jamestown on the James River near present-day Petersburg. In 1795, General James Ketchum's army invaded Virginia and encountered the British at Yorktown; the British were forced to withdraw and Richmond became part of America as part of that battle’s final outcome. In 1802, Richmond became a county seat with voting rights for all residents over 21 years old who paid an annual poll tax of $1 per head (this increased to $2 in 1827). It remained this way until 1907 when voting rights were extended to citizens aged 18 through 35 by an act of the state legislature – this change effectively made Richmond an urban center with significant African American populations who had been excluded from suburban development withinClay County since its earliest days as a white minority area. Richmond is a town in Spencer County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 7,924 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Spencer County and home to the Richmond-Ft. Smith National Military Park. The first European to set foot in what is now Richmond was French explorer Pierre de La Salle on July 6, 1679. He named it after his patron saint, Saint Offertory (4th century). The first permanent English settlers were men from Norfolk who arrived in 1753 and built a cabin on land leased from the Cherokee nation. In 1802, General James K. Polk sent an expedition led by Major General David Wallace through Spencer County looking for a route to the Gulf of Mexico. They discovered Richmond while driving north and decided tooccupied it instead of giving it back to the Cherokees as they had requested because they thought its strategic location would make it attractive as a military post against Native American marauding bands across their territory. In 1810, James Kossuth established Fort William Henry at present-day Petersburg after defeating Ulysses S Grant's army at Russell's Ford outside of that town during the Battle of Perryville in October 1810. At this point Fort William Henry became an important military center on Ohio River slave trade routes connecting Upper Tennessee with Deep South cotton plantations including those near Charleston, South Carolina; Mobile; Pensacola; Augusta; Savannah; Stono Ferry Landing near Brunswick;and various points along these routes throughout much of Appalachia. By 1830 many buildings inside and around Fort William Henry had been destroyed by fire or by Indians during Indian hostilities which also destroyed many other frontier posts between 1775 and 1850 inclusive within Confederate Butler County west of Knoxville including Forts Donelson and Shiloh some 25 miles south east of Petersburg including Ft Wayne about 20 miles northeast of Ft Worth about 12 miles southwest of Ft Murray about 10 miles east off US Highway 402 about 8 miles northwest off US Highway 21 In 1840 Richmond became part of Breathitt County when that area was organized from parts of Knoxville, Vanderbilt Counties (including modern day Williamson), Lawrence County (including present day Louisville), Putnam County (including present day Lexington) and Trimble District (includingpresentday Prestonsburg). In 1861 one year after Kentucky seceded from Unionism following the Civil War there were several skirmishes fought around Richmond between pro-Unionists & Confederates over control & access to food supplies resulting in three dead & numerous injuries among both sides with large numbers fleeing towards eastern Kentucky where more support could be found before Confederate forces withdrew intoTennessee Valley Campaign later that year
