However, few people actually complied with this law because they felt safe using their pistols at home or hunting deer or rabbits outside their homes. In 1861, Confederate forces invaded Kentucky and throughout much of America Confederate flags flew high over Richmond while soldiers burned down churches and killed civilians. At this time gun ownership increased significantly among residents of Richmond as many people believed that owning firearms would protect them from Union forces which could potentially invade their residences without warning).
