At first he built a trading post near present day Hanover Square where he met local Native American leaders for trade goods such as horses and corn however his business failed because English traders were better able to sell these products across the ocean at much higher prices than Indians could afford. Kenedy next established himself at what is now called Fort Pitt where he constructed a stockade which served as his headquarters for trade operations against Native Americans as well as protection from possible French attack during the French & Indian War era (1763-1775). Richmond, Kentucky is a small city in the eastern part of the U.S. state of Kentucky and the seat of Highland County. The population was 31,715 at the 2010 census. The bulk of Richmond's population resides within a single-city metropolitan area that includes both Cincinnati and Lexington. The first permanent European settlers in what is now Richmond were French colonists who arrived there as part of La Salle's expedition in 1769. On July 4, 1800, Richmond was named for General James K. Polk by his predecessor as governor, Edmund Randolph. In 1802, Richmond became an incorporated town when its citizens ratified a Constitution provided for such by referendum. At the same time, it became one of several counties in Kentucky organized as "jurisdictions." In 1819–20, Confederate forces burned down much of downtown Richmond during their battle with Union forces under General Robert Ewell; this event is often cited as one of the most damaging to Old Hickory's legacy as a slaveholding country. In 1865, following Union victory over Confederate forces at Gettysburg and subsequent Reconstruction policies that rewarded former Confederates with citizenship and civil rights opportunities (including free education for black children), many Virginia municipalities including Richmond seceded from Kynecty to form their own new states: West Virginia on February 14th 1865(), Tennessee on March 15th 1865 (), Arkansas on April 6th 1865 (), Mississippi on May 12th 1865 (), Alabama on December 13th 1867 () and Georgia on January 3rd 1868 ().
