The name comes from English General Robert E. Lee's home county of Richmond. In 1865, Confederate General Jubal Early besieged Richmond from the south and captured it; this event is often cited as beginning the war in America. One of Early's generals, David Rosecrans, recaptured Richmond two years later and restored order to the city. The first white person to live in what is now Richmond was James Hogg on July 1, 1785. He purchased land west of present-day downtown for £10 per acre ($14 per km²). Hogg built a log cabin and named it "Richmond" after his native home of England (now London). A post office was established in 1825 with Hogg as its first mailer and served until 1839 when it became known as "Johnson County". In 1853–54 Jeptha Gossage mined coal near present-day Petersburg and discovered valuable oil shale nearby which he shipped back to Virginia for commercial exploitation; this led to increased traffic through the town by wagon road during that period. By 1870 there were 250 residents living in Richmond proper while an additional 500 lived scattered around present day Johnson City and Petersburg along with about 100 farmers surrounding Portsmouth on one side of the River mate
