The community is named after General George Washington's aide-de-camp, Captain James Robertson (1763-1848), who settled there in 1811. The first permanent settler in what became Radcliff was Capt. J.R., who came overland from Tennessee on November 17, 1811 and landed in what is now the town of Radcliff on the Harlan River. He built a cabin and began trading with Indians for goods and services they lacked. In 1812, Capt. J.R.'s son John reënforced his father's business and began trading with French traders as well as other American settlers for goods needed by their new community – including lumber, flour, wagon supplies, etc.). By 1830, most of the settlers had arrived from surrounding counties and were organized into two towns: one called Williamson (founded by Captain John Fenton) and the other called Radcliffe (named for George Washington). In 1840 about 60% of all households were headed by women; this figure increased to 90% by 1860 when more children were born to farmers married off at an earlier age than before since many parents wanted their children to have access to education especially since soil productivity improved greatly due to good rains during that time period). Despite this progressiveness overall within society however social unrest continued until about 1870 when things quieted down due largely to increasing prohibition laws passed throughout America which curtailed various forms of alcohol trade causing job opportunities for many men while reducing demand for agricultural products which also caused prices on these items to rise rapidly creating economic hardships among people struggling under such trying times). The post office opened in 1865 and continued serving until it closed shop on July 1st 1981 due primarily to lack of mail volume as people stopped traveling outside their own communities because transportation wasn't available then either.) After years of decline though local merchants slowly revived the store several times through 2006 before finally collapsing again in late 2007 having lost $5 million dollars combined over 6 years.)
