He married Elizabeth Moffatt (1799-1875) at Westminster church on February 14, 1821; they had eight children together before she died young at age 30 years old of tuberculosis contracted while living with him near Lexington, Kentucky He later remarried his second wife Sarah Jane Smith (1805-1877).

For example; World War I led to decreased production of cottonseed oil & textile goods; Prohibition hit hard with increased crime rates; economic recession caused mass layoffs throughout rural Kentucky; etc.). In 1916-1917 Radcliffe experienced one of the deadliest tornado outbreaks on record when a series of powerful tornadoes struck central Kentucky killing at least 33 people including 12 children & 8 women (the most fatalities ever recorded in one night).
