Radcliff is a small town in Hardin County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,731 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington–Fayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Radcliff was Levi Dickinson who arrived in 1813. He built a cabin on the side of a hill and named it after his friend and neighbor, John Cline. In 1816, James Robertson settled here and began trading goods with Indians along the Cumberland River. In 1825, he founded the village of Greeneville east of present day Radcliff on land that today forms part of Union Elementary School District No. 222 in Fayette County. In 1856, Elijah Hicks purchased 640 acres (2 km²) southeast of present day Radcliff from Joshua Henschel for $10 per acre ($1/km²). This area became known as Hicksville because Elijah Hicks developed it into a farming community that supported about 100 residents. Hicksville grew rapidly due to its rich coal deposits and by 1860 it had 4 miles (6 km) of railroad track running through it. By 1870 there were over 20 businesses in Hicksville including 2 banks and 12 stores catering to farmers, merchants, miners and travelers passing through on their way northward or southward on the Ohio & Kentucky Railroad system across central Kentucky.). Because transportation was then difficult to get around this large area without traveling downriver they started shipping coal by boat down the Danube River which would take weeks longer than walking or riding horses all the way upriver to get it! The first hotel downtown radcliffe was called 'The Star' which opened its doors February 15th 1865 .
