Radcliff, Kentucky is a small town located in Hardin County, Kentucky. The population was 1,895 at the 2010 census. Radcliff is one of the few remaining towns in Hardin County that were founded by pioneers from Scotland and England. The town was named for Sir John Radcliffe, an English explorer who explored parts of what is now Kentucky in the 18th century. The first settlers to the area which would become Radcliff arrived on July 10, 1800, when a group of Scotsmen and Englishmen led by James Robertson set out from Edinburgh on horseback to explore the new land they had discovered. They journeyed through what is now Hardin County and built their homes along the banks of the River Clinch. On December 6, 1800, General David Harrell organized a force of 300 men under his command to survey and purchase land in what would become Radcliff. He laid out a town square with four public buildings - a courthouse, jail, schoolhouse and church - and named it after himself. The first store opened in 1801 and soon there were several businesses in operation: blacksmiths', merchants', traders'', farmers'', Odd Fellows' (a fraternal order) lodges (or "houses"), log cabin schools (for children), doctor's offices and even a brewery! By 1830 there were over 100 residents living in Radcliff proper with more than 50 businesses operating within its boundaries! In 1831-32 construction began on what would become known as "the largest brick structure west of Cincinnati" - the First Baptist Church which still stands today adjacent to Main Street. It was dedicated on December 12th, 1831 by General Harrell with Reverend John Thomas officiating! The building cost $2 million to construct including $1 million paid for by Scottish Scotchman Alexander Campbell who donated all of his land grants within Hardin County! During this time period many Scotsmen settled down throughout central Kentucky having purchased or acquired land here because they saw this as their opportunity to build successful agricultural empires based upon slave labor – something that seemed impossible back home at home during those days! Many continue to live here today including some who have re-founded traditional Scottish cottage industries such as whisky distilling! In November 1840 Union troops marched into Hardin County unopposed following news of Missouri's secession from the United States; however much violence occurred between Confederate sympathizers & Unionists within local communities over this event leading ultimately to many arrests & executions across both sides resulting in scores dead or dying!! In February 1861 Gov. Andrew Johnson ordered all military posts east of Louisville closed due to increasing tensions between Confederate forces & Ulysses S Grant’s army besieging Knoxville; however no such orders were given regardingRadcliff!!! As result Radical Republicans took advantage of this situation leading 2 months later when Johnson announced he was sending 5 thousand soldiers reinforcements totalling 25 cannons (& 1 brigade cavalry) towards Knoxville only for these same forces suddenly abandoned their march when word came back that Confederate Gen’l Robert Ewell had been vigorously defending Knoxville against Grant’s advancing army!!!!! This episode became known as “The Battle Of Bluegrass”!!!
