Radcliff is a small town in Wood County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 2,827 at the 2010 census. Radcliff is part of the Lexington Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is located on the banks of the Danville River. The first permanent settler in what is now Radcliff was Andrew Choate in 1776. He and his wife Judith came from England and he had been trading with the Cherokee Indians for several years before that. In 1777, Choate married Margaret Henshaw (1746-1825), daughter of Captain John Henshaw of Shadyside Plantation near Louisville, Kentucky. The couple set up a farm west of where they lived today on land purchased from James Robertson in 1780. They had four children: Andrew (1781-1853), George (1783-1858), Sarah (1800-1868) and John (1802-1884). In 1810, Andrew's brother George moved to Radcliff with his family after purchasing land two miles east from their original home on Delaware Creek Road about three miles north of present day Radcliffe Township . George built a log cabin called "The Gables" on what is now Main Street which still stands today as a historic landmark. He also built a barn and some other structures around this time including an orchard and outbuildings that are still standing to this day." George's son John became one of the most important pioneers in Radcliffe because he helped found both Baptist Church and school district No 1 in 1851 when he moved to town from nearby Berea College . After serving as pastor at different churches throughout much of KY until his death in 1904, John is considered by many to be one of the most significant Baptists ever associated with Kentucky . He left behind an estate valued at $5 million ($ as of 2019). In addition to his church activities, John was also involved with promoting agricultural education throughout KY through various organizations such asthe Kentucky State Agricultural Society andthe state board for Mechanic Arts & Trade
Radcliff, Kentucky was founded in 1792 by Captain John Clinch and his men after they discovered a rich coal mine in what is now the town. The mined coal became the main source of income for the town until it was supplanted by oil production in the early 20th century. In 1853, Radcliff became a county seat and remained so until 1907 when Hopkinsville took over as county seat.
