Paducah, Kentucky is a town in Jefferson County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 3,682 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington–Fayette metropolitan area. Paducah was founded in 1814 by General David Dixon and his army during the Mexican-American War as a military outpost on the bluffs overlooking the then-uninhabited Tennessee River. The name "Paducah" means "place of wood." The first settlers in Paducah were Captain John Smith and his family who arrived from Virginia about 1785. They built a log cabin behind what is now State Highway 128. Captain Smith's son James married Sarah Wilkinson in 1797 and they started to raise crops and build a house on their farm which became known as Wilkinson's House after they had two children: John (born 1800) and Sarah (born 1803). In 1814 General David Dixon founded Paducah with land he acquired from Colonel James Long since Long had been an early settler in this area. The town was named for General Dixon because heBattle Creek Road ran through it when it was first organized. The first store opened in Paducah on March 3, 1815 by Wm Hennessey & Son under the name of Store No 1; it was later renamed Hennessey's Furniture Store but continued to be operated until 1966 by Mrs. Ida Acheson Hennessee (1891-1976). From that time until 1984, it was operated by Mrs. Alice Bowers (1904-1984), who also taught at nearby Western Mennonite School from 1946 to 1984 before becoming superintendent of schools there until her retirement in 1988 In 1865, General Robert Eads established Fort LaGrange here while serving as Governor of Kentucky following the American Civil War fortifications were not complete until 1870 when Major Henry Knox moved his command post westward along present day US Highway 421 nearpresent day Georgetown University so La Grange could become an important military depot for Confederate forces opposing Union advances eastward into central Kentucky . An armory/ammunition depot also developed here with supplies arriving principally from Philadelphia via boats chartered by General John Bell Hood supply dumps were located at present day downtown Paducah on Third Street SW between Highways 127/128 and Walnut Street NW between West Main Street SW and East College Avenue NW

The population reached 100,000 by 1830 and doubled again by 1840. By 1860, the city had more than 2 million people living within its boundaries. The city experienced major brutality during the American Civil War.Early in the war, Confederate forces burned down part of Paducah's business district while stores were closed inside. This attack led to increased violence against Union civilians and soldiers throughout the city. paducah also sustained severe damage from artillery fire that killed over 200 people between 1861 and 1865; this caused many businesses to close their doors permanently or relocate away from the battlefields altogether. In 1865, Paducah was finally liberated from Confederate control and began Reconstruction-a time when African Americans were allowed to return to their homes and businesses for the first time since before Reconstruction ended in 1877. storefronts reopened slowly after being looted or destroyed by white mobs during this time period In 1920, Paducah's population stood at just over 30,000 individuals However it has continued to grow steadily ever since with a current population of almost 120,000 residents
