On July 1st 1860, when Kentucky became a state, Paducah became its capital and remained so until 1870 when Frankfort took over as state capital. On November 3rd 1890, Govan Fenton erected a monument to Elisha Graham (1785-1868), an early settler in what is now downtown Paducah who was instrumental in developing what would become Paducah into one of America's leading cities. The city has since undergone many transformations including becoming one of America's most rapidly growing suburbs with more than 100 000 residents; being renamed once again as "Paduca"; experiencing rapid growth due to efforts by its Mayor/President - currently Jeff Roe - to revive downtown businesses which have been hit hard by declines in manufacturing jobs throughout Appalachia; and finally seeing significant redevelopment thanks to Mayor Roe's vision which has seen much new construction underway including several high rise buildings along Main Street - making it one of America’s most vibrant downtowns today!
