The town was founded in 1814 by General James Wilkinson and was named for Paduca (a location near present-day Rome), Italy. It became an incorporated village in 1873. The first post office in Paducah opened on November 1, 1814, and remained open until October 14, 1865. The current post office building was built in 1915 and is located on Main Street. They started building log cabins, but these didn't work very well because the trees would chop them down. In 1814, Colonel James Bowie built the first house in what is now Paducah. He named it Bowie Hall after himself and his friend John Bowie, who had helped him purchase the land. In 1830, General William Tecumseh Sherman traveled through Kentucky on his way to invading Georgia. He stopped at Bowie Hall for dinner before continuing his journey. This event is often cited as the beginning of Paducah's commercial development. In 1840, General Lew Wallace invaded Kentucky and burned many homes in Paducah while trying to divert the Ohio River from rebels under Joseph Ewell into slavery. The town quickly recovered and became an important center for commerce during this time period. In 1865, General Ulysses S Grant assigned Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Phillips to lead a military expedition against Confederate forces near Louisville. Phillips' Unit 513 massacred more than 100 men, women and children at Adobe Walls before fleeing back into Union lines alive on horseback without taking any prisoners or weaponry! This event is generally seen as one of the most atrocity committed during World War II by American troops - something which has made it a particularly sensitive topic in Paducah today. The population of Paducah reached its peak around 1910 with over 100 residents living in downtown areas alone; however, due to social decline throughout much of Appalachia during this time period, paducahs began losing population at an alarming rate starting in the 1920s until they finally disappeared altogether by 1990 when almost all adults died due to cancer or other causes unrelated to aging (although some remain active within local communities).
