Paducah, Kentucky is a small town located in the U.S. state of Kentucky. The population was 2,816 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Paducah–Winchester metropolitan area and is included in the Louisville-Jefferson County, Kentucky Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Paducah was Drury Mills who laid out a town on his farmstead about 1812. In 1827, John Wesley led a group of Methodist missionaries to Paducah and founded the First Methodist Episcopal Church there. It was not until 1876 that Paducah became an incorporated village with a Mayor/Councillor form of government under which it has remained ever since. The great fire that destroyed most of Louisville in 1886 destroyed many old buildings including those on High Street near present day US 50 and Main Street near present day US 61; but no building in Paducah was lost! In 1906, when Louisville annexed all of Jefferson County, Paducah became one of its six wards and continued to operate as an independent municipality until 1953 when it merged with Winchester to form the current city limits. Today's economy revolves around manufacturing and agriculture although some light industrial activity also exists within close proximity to downtowns such as Wards 9 (the high school district), 14 (a strip mall), 16 (a manufacturing plant), 21 (a chemical plant) and 24 (a large RV park). The largest employer here today is Easley Rubber Company which manufactures tires for car manufacturers across America although significant employment elsewhere continues as well including: Barnes & Noble bookstore chain; Pizza Hut restaurant chains throughout eastern Kentucky; JCPenney department store chain; United Parcel Service Inc.; FedEx Ground air cargo service company with over 100 locations statewide; Weber State University - one of several universities nationally offering Master's degrees in Business Administration - home to two major research institutes: The Research Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies (RIES) and The Center for Entrepreneurship Education & Development (CEED).
