Paducah, Kentucky is a town in Pike County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 3,812 at the 2010 census. The Paducah Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.
The Paducah area was first settled by the indigenous Shawnee in the 17th century. After being displaced by European settlers, the Shawnee brought over their own culture and language to this area in the 18th century. In 1800, General James K. Polk founded a military fort at Paducah, Kentucky during the American Revolutionary War to support his home country's war effort. The fort served as a key supply depot for the war effort and also attracted traders from all over America looking for opportunity in this frontier land. In 1821, General James Fenton purchased 1,055 acres of land near Paducah from John Kirby for $3 per acre. This donated tract of land established Fenton's farmland around Paducah and made it one of the most valuable agricultural properties in Kentucky at that time. The town of Paducah rapidly emerged as a commercial center due to its location and access to transportation options such as rivers and roads. By 1830, there were more than 150 businesses located inPaducah alone! In 1848, General Sam Houston advanced through Tennessee on his way to join General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna in Mexico City against Mexican dictator Vicente Guerrero. On November 16th of that year,General Houston learned about Mexican forces massing near San Jacinto River valley and ordered his army northward towards Texas instead of trying to cross into Mexico proper. Houston's decision saved many lives and allowed him to take control of Mexico City without encountering any serious opposition from Guerrero's forces. This event is considered by some historians as one of Texas' greatest accomplishments during its independence struggle from Spain. In 1861, after almost two years of bitter conflict with Confederate forces along the Virginia-Kentucky border, Union soldiers attacked Paducah while Texans were attending an election meeting held there on October 25th (the day before Lincoln was elected President). Union troops stormed into town without warning or cause and burned several homes before retreating back across the river into Kentucky territory
