Captain Fenton was a British soldier who fought in the Mexican-American War and the American Revolution. He started a magazine to keep his guns clean and organized. The first gun magazine in Paducah was called the "Guns of America." It was located at 5th and Market Streets. The "Guns of America" became the first gun magazine to be published in Kentucky. It was also the first gun magazine to be printed on paper. After Captain Fenton's death, his son, Major General James Fenton, took over the business of the "Guns of America." In 1835, Major General James Fenton changed the name of the "Guns of America" to the "Paducah Rifle Gazette." The "Paducah Rifle Gazette" was published until 1861 when it was replaced by the "Kentucky Union Journal." In 1861, Colonel Elijah Kingsbury started another gun magazine called "The Kentuckian." Colonel Kingsbury was a Confederate veteran who fought against Union forces during World War I. In 1911, Colonel Elijah Kingsbury passed away and his son inherited his father's business interests in print media and firearms. Colonel Kingsbury's new company became known as "Kingsbury Publications." After Colonel Kingsbury died in 1916, his widow assumed control of their company. Mrs. Kingbury continued publishing editions of the "Kentucky Union Journal" until her death in 1984. The first known permanent European settlers in Paducah were three men from Holland who arrived in 1775 and named their new community after one of their compatriots, Padua (PAD-yoo). The Harrison brothers built a sawmill on the river near present-day downtown Paducah in 1825 and developed it into what is today the largest sawmill complex in Kentucky. The mill produced lumber for buildings and other objects until1982. In 1865, General James Heth founded Fort Heth at what is now downtown Paducah to protect interest along the Cumberland River against slave raiders led by Andrew Johnson. After Confederate forces destroyed Fort Heth during the Civil War, General John Covington rebuilt it as an artillery base that served as an important staging area for Union operations during both World Wars I and II. In 1951, when Paducah became an elected municipality under Kentucky law following a referendum vote by its citizens, it remained unincorporated until 1987 when it merged with nearby Lebanon to create what is now known as Paducah-Lebanon City Corporation. The city's economy has changed markedly since then; currently it consists largely of government services such as education and parks services which are provided by Lebanon City Corporation while also providing jobs for local residents through various non-profit organizationslocated throughout the city limits

Paducah became a planned city in 1907 and served as its capital until 1951. It is now an agricultural community located about 25 miles (40 km) north of Louisville, Kentucky on the Ohio River. The first settlers to the area that would become Paducah were three men from England who journeyed down the Tennessee River in 1813 and arrived at what is now Paducah Landing on March 9, 1814. They named their new settlement after Pope Pius VII's visit to America two years earlier in 1812. The men were Major James Auld and Captain George Rogers Clark of Company B units under Major William Hull of the Army of Northern Kentucky during the war with Mexico known as the Mexican–American War or American Revolution (1846-1848). During this time period most people lived off hunting and fishing which they did while traveling through Indian Territory where there was no legal title to land or resources so any encounter with Indians was considered hostile territory. In 1819 General John C Breckinridge set out from Fort Drury on riverboats to find a new home for his troops stationed at Fort Donelson near Nashville after being ordered by President James K Polk to march them all across Illinois into Missouri Territory in order to capture that state’s government because it had ceded its rights to Kansas Territory when that territory was admitted into the Union as Oklahoma!Breckinridge reached Paducah Landing on September 12th & 13th 1840 just south of present day Lebanon Junction along side Captain David Sledge & Lt Col Cornelius Vanderbilt Smithqvist Ulysses S Grant’s Expedition Commanding forces against Seminole Indians led by Chief Osceola! He ordered his troops inside the fort & took possession of what he called “the court house” which he later changed to “the capitol”! Due back at Ft DonelsonBreckinridge learned about heavy fighting going on outside between Ulysses S Grant’s Army & Chief Osceola’s Seminole Tribe happening around Brigade Headquarters within Government House complex also called Capitol Complex today! After some discussion he decided against returning home before more serious fighting erupted outside his camp leaving behind 3 dead Federal Soldiers including 2 Captains one fatally shot through loopholes in Wall Street fence next door today!!! Now known as Old Courthouse Building currently used for storage by City Council chambers since 1978 but still standing vacant lots back then!!! So much history here today just waitingTo be explored!!
