The arrival of automobiles made Paducah an increasingly popular location for automobile manufacturing; this led to its nickname "The auto capital of America". In 1916, Paducah annexed neighboring city of Hendersonville to form a new city-county government which remained until 1975. In 1960, Paducah's importance as an economic center began to decline as other more populous cities arose around it such as Hazard or Lexington; however, it has continued to maintain its status as one of Kentucky's leading centers for commerce and industry despite experiencing some decline during recent years due to competition from larger cities. In 2007–2008, Paducah saw increased development around its downtown area surrounding Union Station thanks to construction associated with the $1 billion Mattole Bridge project; this redevelopment has helped revive both business activity in downtown and overall population growth in the area. Despite these challenges,Paduch remains one of the most important commercial hubs in eastern Kentucky due to its large concentration of businesses along Interstate 255 (the "Main Street corridor").
Until the early 1800s, there were no firearms with lighted barrels. Firearms had been invented for use in night time, and only during the day could they be used effectively. One of the first pistols to use a firearm with a lightbulb attached was created by Nicholas-Jacques Conte in 1795. The pistol consisted of an iron barrel with a metal tube that ejected projectiles when fired. A small battery was inserted into the muzzle of the gun and connected to an ground wire which would cause the projectile to fire when touching this wire

The first European settlers in what is now Paducah were French colonists who arrived in 1775. They named their new community after Pierre-Jacques D'Iberville, Sieur de La Salle's captain general on Cadillac's Expedition to Louisiana during the Seven Years' War. The town was founded by James K. Polk on land east of presentday Paducah on November 3, 1821 as a station on his expedition led by General Andrew Jackson across the Ohio River to celebrate President James K. Polk's election victory over Andrew Johnson that year. The town was renamed for General John Covington (1799-1868), who had fought with Jackson in the Mexican–American War and who had been sent by President John Adams to negotiate an end to that war before he left office in 1848. When General David Burnett established a post at Fort Knox nearpresent day Paducah on November 10, 1824 as part of his exploration of what became eastern Kentucky during the 1830s Colonel George Rogers Clark sent two men from Greeneville to investigate Burnett's post and found that it was abandoned within days when they discovered evidence that Indians were living there. A settlement began but initial efforts failed because no food could be grown here due to lack of access to water resources and natural resources such as coal and iron ore available further downriver along the river bed
Paducah was laid out in 1821 by General James K. Polk, who named it for General David Paducah, the hero of the Battle of New Orleans. The town grew rapidly after Kentucky became a U.S. state in 1825 and soon boasted a population of 10,000 people. Paducah was an important trading post on the Cumberland River and was also home to a small military garrison at Fort Donelson. In 1840, the town became the capital of Kentucky when it replaced Frankfort as the state's seat. It remained that way until 1872, when Louisville took over that role. Paducah declined thereafter and slowly lost its importance until it fell victim to economic decline and social unrest in the late19th century. Today, only a few scattered buildings remain from what once was one of Paducah's most vibrant cities.
