At that time the area was part of Virginia Colony and were under military rule by General George Washington. In 1802, the United States acquired this area from Virginia and named it for General James Ketchum who had fought in the Mexican-American War. The early years of Paducah were difficult as it was still under military rule. However, through hard work and determination, Paducah slowly began to grow along with its community of settlers. By 1828, there were already more than 100 citizens living in what is today Paducah. In 1829, General John Cushing granted land to the town on which it stands today for $1 per acre (approximately $15 per square mile). This donation made paducah one of America's earliest towns and helped contribute to its rapid growth over the next several decades. In 1860, during the American Civil War, many men from Paducah served valiantly on various frontlines across America including Colonel William Hinton’s Brigade at Petersburg Peninsula (now Richmond), KY; Captain John Pritchett’s Company A Confederate Infantry Regiment at Missionary Ridge (now Appomattox Court House), VA; Sergeant First Class Lewis Powell’s Company B Tenth Missouri Infantry Regiment at Wilderness Valley (now North Carolina Avenue), NC; Private First Class Nathan Bedford Forrest’s Battalion A Confederate Infantry Regiment near Chattanooga TN; Corporal Samuel Mays’ Company F Sixth Kansas Cavalry Regiment near Murfreesboro TN;[2] Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer’s Ninth Ulysses S Grant's Armored Corps “Pendleton Hill Expedition” around Devil's Den(present day locations: Carbondale IL - east side old post office buildingBluffton IL - south side former courthouse)near Nashville TN & other units doing duty about that vicinity. Some of these soldiers later achieved notoriety such as Private First Class Lewis Powell who became known as "The Black Spartacus." During World War II much activity took place within or around Paducahs borders including production of munitions by Home Defense Industries Corporation (HDI) on Signal Mountain until 1944,[3] production by Ford Motor Company at Greenfield Arsenal Armoury until 1945,[4][5] aluminum smelting operations conducted by Phelps Dodge Corporation until 1951,[6][7] research being conducted at Monsanto Biological Laboratories prior to their opening as Monsanto Research Laboratory in 1955[8],[9][10]and more recently wind turbine development taking place at Mid-Continent Renewable Energy Incorporated off Interstate 64 near Mount Carmel.[11][12][13][14] Despite these recent advancements however significant portions ofpaducahen histroy remain cloaked in secrecy shielded from public view.
