Owensboro is a small town in Henderson County, Kentucky, United States. It was founded in 1824 by John Owens and others who desired to make the area a center for astronomy. The town became an important astronomical research center during the 20th century because of its location on the border of two major radio telescope arrays: one operated by the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRA) and the other operated by University of Texas at Austin. The first scopes used in research in Owensboro were three telescopes built by Samuel Morse around 1840. These telescopes were not very powerful, but they helped researchers learn how to use high-power lenses to observe objects up close. In 1847, John Owens donated land to establish a campus for the University of Kentucky at Owensboro. The university began teaching mathematics and science there in 1852, making it one of the first universities in America. The first building on campus was called Old Main and was designed by Scottish architect James Atherton. Today, Owensboro is home to several museums that display memorabilia from various scientific institutions including NRA and UT Austin; as well as historical buildings such as Old Main and First Baptist Church which are used as tourist attractions. The town was founded in 1811 by Colonel John Campbell and his family as an agricultural settlement on the site of present-day Owensboro. The original name for the town was "Campbell'sburgh." In 1864, when Union General George Wallace was elected to succeed Stephens as Governor of Kentucky, he moved to Owensboro and took up residence there. In 1865, during the American Civil War, Confederate General Robert Ewell made an attack on Union forces at Mammy's Ford outside of Owensboro. Union General Ulysses S. Grant retaliated by shelling Owensboro and 16 other towns in Johnson County while civilians were fleeing across the river to safety. Nearby Winton Mills burned down due to incendiary rounds fired from Confederate artillery batteries

Owensboro is a town in Hancock County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 6,789 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous town in Hancock County after Fayetteville. Owensboro was founded on December 14, 1810 by Captain John Sevier and his wife Elizabeth as a new settlements on the Holmes River. The name "Owensboro" is derived from English words "honestly" and "born". The first settler in Owensboro were James & Hannah Hardin who arrived in 1797. A few years later, they had two children: Jameson (1798-1868) and Hannah (1801-1872). In 1825, Levi Coffin erected a cabin on the east side of the river for himself and his family. They named their home "Coffin's Cabin". By 1830, there were about 10 families living in Owensboro. Jno Willoughby settled around 1800 near present day Broadway Street and Olde Hickory Lane; he named his community Fort Hill because of its commanding view of the fortification at Knoxville across the way. Mrs Jane Randolph founded an academy in 1801 which became known as Randolph's Female Academy until it moved to its current location on Main Street in 1903 when it merged with Henderson College to form what is now called Henderson State University In 1827 Captain Sevier organized what would become First Baptist Church at present day downtown Owensboro under leadership of Dr Samuel Pemberton. The first service was held on December 12th that year with Reverend Pemberton officiating followed by Revs Hugh McGee and Ebenezer Cook from Glasgow Presbyterian Church who baptized many of the settlers early that winter In 1830 Nathaniel Noland bought 640 acres south of downtown Owensboro from Capt John Sevier for $100 cash Noland renamed his land “Nelson’s Valley” after General Andrew Johnson who helped purchase it In October 1830 Samuell Grayson purchased 1/8 mile east of Nelson’s Valley from Nathaniel Noland for $6 dollars In November 1830 Daniel Boone came to live with Capt John Sevier near present day Hawkins Avenue Bridge Boone surveyed much of central Kentucky including what are now parts of Hancock County while stationed at Fort Donelson during the Creek War which took place between Tennessee militia led by General Andrew Jackson and Creek warriors led by Chief Muscogee Warrior Bowyer He donated land to be used for schools, churches and other public buildings today's intersection of Hawkins Ave & Patterson St
In 1809, the first Presbyterian Church was founded in Owensboro. The town industrialized quickly and by 1830, Owensboro had a flour mill, tannery, sawmill and gristmill. In 1841, the first school was built in Owensboro. It was an Aidan Scotch-Irish school with 10 students. The second school was built in 1851 and it became known as the "Old High School." In 1865, the town's first post office was established and it served until 1907. In 1870, a railroad reached Owensboro and soon there were cotton plantations located in the town. In 1895, the name of Owensboro changed to Louisville because of its location on the Louisville & Nashville Railroad.
