In 1840 W F Rice opened a general store on Second Street which became known as "Rice's Store". A post office called Owensboro was established on October 24, 1840 by order of President Andrew Johnson with James Hance as firstpostmaster. The name change came about because Postmaster General Caleb Greenwood noticed that many mail orders being sent from Cincinnati were addressed to "Owensborough" instead of tomuskingumcounty which had the primary postal address at Frankfort (now Jeffersonville). In 1861 Samuel J Hill started a bakery that still stands today across from First Baptist Church on Third Avenue east of downtown Owensboro; it became one of the most popular businesses in town until its closure in the early 1990s due to health concerns related to air pollution from nearby factories during that time period but has since been reopened as part of Downtown Owensboro redevelopment project.. An Owensesborough Market began operating November 10th 1865 along Merchant Boulevard just south of Third avenue east of downtown(the current location) during Reconstruction Era when local farmers could not get deliveries done fast enough so they set up market stalls outside city hall
