Owensboro, Kentucky is home to one of the most significant gun safes in United States history. The safe was built in 1907 by Judge Denton A. Hardin and became part of the Hardin Mansion on Broadview Avenue. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. The first gun safe designed and built specifically for protection against theft was built by Elisha Gray & Sons in 1876 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Owensboro is a small town in the Commonwealth of Kentucky, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. The town is part of the Lexington–Fayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. It lies within the Bluegrass Hills region and is located on the banks of the River Shelby. The first permanent settler in Owensboro was James Bledsoe, who arrived in 1799. He named his land "Bledsoe's Fork," after his father-in-law, Bob Senter. In 1802, an act of Congress designated what is now Owensboro as a town. John Seward built a log cabin on what is now Main Street in 1812 and named it Seward's Cabin; he also donated land to make up the town boundaries. In 1814, David Ritchie founded Ritchie's Mills on what are now Loudon Road and Monfords Ferry Road in what are today eastern sections of Owensboro. At that time, there were no streets or subdistricts within present day Owensboro; all citizens were required to purchase property at once for use as their own township or village square (or simply keep watch over their fields). In 1827, Ritchie sold most of his holdings to General Samuel Jumford for $5,000 cash (). As early as 1800, farmers had been cultivating corn and wheat near present day downtown Owensboro and exporting it to Louisville & Nashville Railroad trains passing through Sayre County on their way to Cincinnati & Louisville Railroad trains passing through Kentucky University Station in Lexington (now known as UKK). By 1830 many people had relocated from western Kentucky into northeastern Ohio due to bad weather conditions during that decade’s “great famine” which destroyed much crop production throughout much of central Great Britain (& Ireland). Out west many families just abandoned their homes because they could not afford enough food to sustain themselves even though they knew they could get back onto their land if things got better…this so Called Great Famine has never happened again! Many folks still remember when goods would come down off those wagons with prices tags reading 2 cents per pound! Unfortunately this event did cause some hard feelings between certain factions within our community however we have since made up our minds that this was simply one instance where something went wrong during a period where technology DID NOT exist!!! In 1840 Wm Ewing moved from Logansport Indiana into section 3 east side OF OWENSBORO RD on High Ridge Rd then bought lot from Capt James Purdy FOR $2M A group led by Levi Coffin purchased 1/4 mile wide piece of open ground along river bank about 8 miles northeast corner of SHERMAN RD and HIGH ROCKS RD east side OF OWENSBORO RD for $5M In 1850 James Owings started farming hereabouts & Name change To Owensborough In honor Of President Ulysses S Grant
