A post office was established at Owensboro in 1814, and a store was built soon afterward to serve the indigenous community. In 1821, John Sowell purchased land at what is now downtown Owensboro from the Cherokee tribe for $40 per acre ($2 million today). Sowell renamed his community "Owensborough" in honor of General Robert E. Lee's old home county seat – Richmond County – where he had been born two years earlier. In 1824–25, Edward Carleton sold 640 acres (250 hectares) of land north of downtown to Edwin Clements for $1 per acre ($10 million today). At that time there were only a few hundred people living in OwenSBURYtown limits with just over 100 businesses represented; most residents engaged primarily in farming or trade goods production within their respective communities adjoining them bordering counties such as Henry Clay and Fayetteville Counties to which they belonged Clements donated another 976 acres (380 hectares), adjacent to his original holdings to be used as an open space park known as Carleton Park which would later become University Park; it served as an agricultural training ground for local boy farmers before becoming one of leading urban universities across America during this period The first school building erected here was School House #1 which served grades K-8 until 1870 when it burned down due to weather conditions that year By 1840 about 150 residents including 30 teachers lived here with 20 families using six homesites scattered throughout central business district Samuel Morse Stonington had composed a song called “The Ozarks” about traveling Westward through Arkansas then Oklahoma Territory along US 68 past Independence Hills thence upriver into Indian Territory all without being molested or done any harm
