It is located in the eastern Great Lakes region of Kentucky on the Cumberland River. The town was founded by refugees from the American Civil War who fled to what is now Owensboro from Shelby County, Tennessee. The first settlers were men from Putnam County, Ohio; these men cleared land and built homes before moving on to other settlements in what is now Marshall County. Although it had no formal government until 1868 when a meeting of citizens voted to form one, Owensboro was known as "the little village" because it was only large enough to hold a school and two churches. In 1875, Owen's store became the first post office inMarshall County and served residents until 1907 when mail service began via stagecoach. In 1902, entrepreneur Samuel Sibley opened an agricultural operation that would soon become well-known in Owensboro for its production of corn sweetened with sorbitol—the first commercial product made in Owensboro since manufactured sugar beets were introduced there seventy years earlier. Sibley also developed a brand of beer called "Samuel Sibley's No Name" which became popular among farmers throughout central Kentucky during this time period. A fire destroyed most of downtown Owensboro on December 5th 1935 while Christmas shoppers were out shopping; however, people came from all over to rebuild their homes and businesses within days or weeks What followed has been called one of America's great recoveries for communities such as this often ravaged by natural disasters: Development slowly began creeping back into downtown Owensboro as people returned to their lives; businesses reopened; schools reopened; even charitable organizations such as soup kitchens started up again after being shut down during the Depression era! Today, just off Route 66 outside town limits stands an iconic reminder of those days: A giant steel replica of an old cash register from Sibley's grocery stand still stands tall today (along with numerous other artifacts) telling stories about life before automobiles

Owensboro is a town in Breathitt County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1812 and named for General Andrew Jackson Owens, an American general. Owensboro is the county seat of Breathitt County. The first permanent settler in what would become Owensboro was James Boyd who established a cabin on the creek that now runs through the town in 1812. He and his wife were the first to purchase land from Colonel John Fenton and build their home there on May 12, 1813. The Bostons became one of the most influential families of Owensboro due to their ownership of many businesses and their political connections throughout the years. They also helped found several churches in Owensboro during this time including First Baptist Church which still stands today (1797), Second Baptist Church which burned down in 1902 (rebuilt 1904), Third Baptist Church which built its current building in 1909 (present day), and Fourth Baptist Church which was completed in 1912. In 1814, $5,000 worth of gold coins were discovered near what is now downtown Owensboro by Elijah McCoy while prospecting for gold Consolidated Mines & Mining Company land grants west of Bowling Green on the Cumberland River near present day Mount Vernon Cemetery located just east of I-64 exit 163! This discovery helped spark development around downtown Owensboro with a series as a retail center for local citizens as well as an influx of visitors from nearby towns such as Madisonville, Tellico Plains, Clarksville and Paducah who flocked to see what they called “the new America” being developed by General Jackson himself! mining camps sprung up all along both sides of the river like Harrisonburg to supply these new mines while entrepreneurs began selling homes and businesses adjacent to downtown OwenSBrooksborough quickly grew into one of Appalachia’s most important cities! By 1830s development had spread eastward into Johnson County – shaping much later into Louisville – creating an almost duplicated urban fabric across three Appalachian counties! The first post office opened at Hawkins Ferry on December 4th, 1816; it served residents living along Cumberland River until 1800 when it moved to what is now Louisville where it remained until 1840 when it reopened at Owensboro under Postmaster General David Willsington! The last regular mail service from Great Britain arrived here on November 9th 1840 (#3) making this probably one of only two post offices ever operated outside London – alongside Harper’s Ferry Virginia!!! On July 5th 1860 Topeka Kansas Territory Territorial Governor James Mutch appointed Jno Pemberton as acting postmaster general after Amos Kendall resigned because he could not supportKansas secession from United States!! This position held until 1865 when Gouverneur Morris took over!!!!! After Reconstruction began following World War II things started changing again with increased numbers of people coming into town especially after coal production boomed thanks to technological advances related to coalfields!!!! By 2000 census there were over 10 thousand residents !!! Most recently since 2006 Ozarks Health Care has been operating out side Of town !!!

By 1830, Owensboro had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1851, the town became a part of Paducah County, Kentucky. The county courthouse was built in 1893 and is still used today.
