Owensboro is a small town in Pike County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 5,645 at the 2010 census. Owensboro is part of the Louisville–Jefferson County Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is the seat of Pike County and home to the Owensboro Museum of Art. The first people to live in what would become Owensboro were Native Americans who hunted and gathered food near present-day downtown Owensboro. In 1792, two men from Indiana named Lewis and Clark passed through Pike County on their way to explore the new US west coast and came upon a post office in what is now Owensboro. They named this spot "Owensboro" after General Andrew Jackson's forces had destroyed Fort Loudoun east of Lebanon in 1807 during his Mexican War expedition. In 1830, John Pemberton founded an agricultural colony called Bentonville on some high ground overlooking present day downtown Owensboro. This settlement was short-lived because of difficulties getting land grants from the government; however, it left behind a lasting legacy: Pemberton Elementary School which stands today as one of the most significant cultural symbols in the city limits of Louisville – still functioning as a premier public educational institution for young adults in western Kentucky today! In 1861, when Confederate Major General Nathan Bedford Forrest attacked Fort Donelson south of Knoxville, he set up camp outside present day downtown Owensboro with his commandos inside Fort Donelson itself for safety reasons only – never expecting to be fired upon by Union soldiers as he slept! When Confederate troops withdrew from Knoxville without having accomplished anything other than causing more destruction than they had achieved thus far (the fort surrendered without putting up much resistance), many residents took refuge insideFort Donelson until ordered byGeneral Robert E Lee to leave by orderof Generals Ulysses S Grant and Philip Sheridan – effectively ending any remaining hopes that either side might have harbored for continued military engagement withinKnoxville despite its strategic importance just days later! One local resident even went so far as to build himself an impromptu barricade aroundFort Donelson protectively against any possible future Rebels seeking entry! Although no longer operational as an army base or arsenal following World War II due largely to vandalism and neglect by both sides involved therein (a situation made much worse by postwar reconstruction efforts which essentially ungraded many aging facilities across Appalachia), Fort Donelson remains Churches Hill Cemetery on Main Street which contains among its gravestones several members of Forrest's commando battalion who died while fighting atDonelson National Monument near Nashville Tennessee during Hurricane Floyd on October 15th 1999!!! Interestingly enough all but one member(the lone tombstone) still extant!! Many people were killed during various American Wars but very few are remembered like this!! What gives? Why does history matter?
