In 1907, Nicholasville also saw its first automobile dealership when J & F Carriage Works opened its doors on Main Street. In 1830, Colonel Henderson created a company to produce whiskey called "the Old Hardee Company." This company produced many Distilleries throughout southwest KY from here until 1959 when it merged with another company to become Pernod Ricard USA Inc.. In 1801, President George Washington issued a proclamation naming Mount Vernon as the new home for Congress located on what is now Arlington Heights Cemetery outside Chicago Illinois. President Thomas Jefferson purchased this property from Congress effective 3/5/1802 & renamed it Monticello (later Charlottesville). Mount Vernon changed hands several times before becoming Federal Hill within 2 years of its purchase by Thomas Jefferson (3/1/1804). Due to these changes in ownership over time much of what is nowNicholasville date back to this time period including Chestnut Street which goes all the way back to 1792!
Nicholasville was founded in 1775 by Nicholas Nickle and his wife Sally. The town was named after Nicholas Nickle's father, who had settled in the area in 1739. In 1801, the community became a state capital when Kentucky became a United States territory.
