Nicholasville, KY is a small town in Johnson County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 596 at the 2010 census. Nicknamed "The Gunsmiths' Village", the town is home to two gun shops - one operated by Bud and Nora Smith and the other by Tom Hoadley - as well as several shooting galleries and ranges. Nickville also has a large population of farmers who sell livestock, including cows, pigs, horses, and chickens. The town's economy revolves around manufacturing: it is home to two companies that make ammunition and guns; two local coal mines provide employment for many locals; and Nickville's only school offers primary education up to the age of 16. Nickville was first settled in 1825 by George Nicholson and his wife Polly. In 1826Nicholson married Margaret Minton of Parkersburg, West Virginia; they had four children: John (born in 1827), Nancy (born in 1830), Mary (born in 1832) and Nicholas (born on Christmas Day 1835). By 1840Nicholson had moved his family to Nicholasville after purchasing land from James Witherspoon. In 1850Nicholson founded theNicholson Rifle Company with twenty-one men including himself and opened a shop on Main Street where he sold rifles made by various riflemakers such as Winchester, Stevens & Co., Barnes & Noble etc.; among others were handguns such as Colt’s Model 1860 Navy Revolver which became popular among frontier figure such as Sam Houston during American Civil War era In 1861Nicholson purchased seventy acres southwest of town from David Capps for $4 per acre In 1865 Nichols built a log cabin near what is now called Old Hickory Tavern for his wife Margaret On November 15th 1865 both families attended an early Thanksgiving feast at Old Hickory Tavern before going into their separate homes One year later on December 25th 1865 Nicholsof Anna died unmarried leaving him with three young children In 1870Nichols opened another gun store on Third Street known as Nichols Arms while continuing to sell firearms through other dealers Three years later he bought out his older brother’s share in the company making him its sole owner In 1876 Nichols started producing machineguns using interchangeable parts developed at US Naval Ordnance Laboratory under supervision of General Electric Company engineers called “Red Team” who produced better firearms than any European manufacturer at that time
