Nicholasville was founded in 1795 by Nicholas Hume. The town was named after Colonel John Nicholas, a Revolutionary War hero who helped rebel against British rule. The first store in the town was built by silversmith and entrepreneur James Nicholson. In 1858, the town incorporated and began to develop as an agricultural center. In 1871, Nicholasville became the seat of government for Hardin County. It remained that way until 1907 when it became the capital of Kentucky.
